Vision for the Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority

My vision for the Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority is to improve multimodal access to public transportation by centering the needs of community members. Integrating a robust multimodal transit system is needed to create and sustain thriving communities, whether walking, bicycling, riding the bus, or driving.

Community Outreach + Engagement

Community involvement in the decision-making process is crucial. I plan to gather input from public surveys, host and attend community events and meetings, and gather feedback via social media platforms.

Mobility + Transportation Justice

Mobility and transportation justice focuses on ensuring everyone has equitable access to safe, affordable, and convenient transportation options.

Informed Decision Making

Research new and best practices that could help improve our public transit system.

Equitable Access

People of all races, ethnicities, income levels, abilities, and ages should be able to reach opportunities regardless of mobility and transportation options.

Safety

Everyone should feel safe using the transportation system, with infrastructure prioritizing pedestrians, cyclists, and riders on public transit.

Environmental Impact

Our mobility + transit system should be designed to minimize pollution and promote sustainable practices.

What is Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority?

Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority (RMTA) is the newly expanded board for Metro. RMTA is responsible for overseeing public transit for the City of Omaha. The RMTA board sets agency policy, manages the budget, reviews procurement contracts, and more. The core functions of the board include:

Operating Public Transportation Systems:

  • Bus networks: RMTAs often operate a network of bus lines throughout the metropolitan area, providing access to various destinations.
  • Rail Systems: Some RMTAs may also manage street cars, light rail, or other rail-based public transportation options.
  • Paratransit services: RMTAs offer paratransit services for individuals with disabilities who are unable to use regular bus or rail services.

Planning and Development:

  • Route planning: RMTAs analyze ridership data and community needs to determine optimal routes for their systems.
  • System expansion: They may plan and execute the expansion of existing services or introduce entirely new transportation options.
  • Integration: An RMTA might work to integrate different transportation modes (buses, bike-share , etc.) for seamless travel across the region.

Fare Collection and Management:

  • Setting fares: RMTAs establish fare structures that balance affordability with the financial needs of the system.
  • Ticketing and payment systems: They oversee the implementation and management of ticketing systems, including passes, mobile apps, or cash fares.

Community Outreach and Engagement:

  • Promoting ridership: RMTAs often undertake initiatives to encourage people to use public transportation, reducing traffic congestion and pollution.
  • Community outreach and engagement: They engage with the community to understand their needs and concerns regarding public transportation.

Overall, the Regional Metropolitan Transit Authority plays a crucial role in keeping the metropolitan area connected and mobile.
